HONDURAS

Since Honduras was listed by Global Witness as the most dangerous country for environmental activism in the world, conflicts and episodes of violence against community leaders and members who have opposed mining, hydroelectric, logging and tourism projects have become visible. The assassination of leader Berta Cáceres was a milestone that underscored the lack of prior consultation, the state’s commitment to the extractive model and a lack of response to the international demand for protection of environmental defenders, all of which generate a cycle of violence driven by impunity. Cáceres is one of many such victims.
